Hi,
My name is Mark Tiger, creator of this blog, and of the "Smokers to Non-Smokers" program. Find out more about the program:
I was totally addicted to tobacco products, mainly cigarettes; and spent 20 years desperately trying to stop smoking without succeeding.
Finally in 1999, I used a method that I had created for myself; and I managed to become a non-smoker. I have never smoked again since.
In 2005, I decided to share the methods that I had used to successfully become a Non-Smoker, with Smokers who wanted to become Non-Smokers.
After helping over three hundred Smokers to become Non-Smokers, my success rate was a little over 99%. From this experience I have improved the program, to assist those who are already non-smokers; to remain non-smokers for the rest of their lives.
Smoking Facts – Part 4
How Do I quit?
8 out of 10 people find it most effective to stop smoking abruptly. The truth is that you need to stop Cold-Turkey, there is no other way. The reason that there is no other way is because of the addictive powers of Nicotine. One smoke or dose of Nicotine leads to another smoke, until before you know it, you are back to smoking the amount of cigarettes per day, that you had smoked before. Cutting down on cigarettes does not help, I have tried it many times before I finally got it right to become a non-smoker. All cutting down on cigarettes does, is to make you think about smoking more during the day. Some people believe if they just have one cigarette per day, that they have broken the habit.
The most powerful reason why you can’t become a Non-Smoker, is not because of the habit, but because of Nicotine addiction. Please don’t under-estimate the power of Nicotine addiction. Some of my clients had experimented with Heroin, and told me; that it was much easier to walk away from Heroin addiction, then it was from Nicotine addiction. I have heard people saying that Nicotine addiction is more powerful than Heroin addiction.
If you decide to have one cigarette per day, you are still addicted to Nicotine. If you stop smoking, and you use Nicotine loaded chewing gums or patches, or electronic cigarettes, you are still addicted to Nicotine. However I should just clarify here, that if you feel the damage from smoking spreading in your lungs; then you should use Nicotine replacement products. But only until you have managed to become a Non-Smoker. By Non-Smoker, I also mean, freedom from Nicotine addiction. I say freedom, because any type of addiction puts you into slavery.
You need to decide that you will never have another cigarette in your life. Addiction is not logical, and Nicotine addiction will have you doing all sorts of things, that seem to defy explanation. I am always amazed at the lengths that people will go to, in order to have a smoke. You can never have another cigarette in your life again, not even a drag. Once you stop it is gone forever, otherwise you will invite Nicotine addiction back into your life.
At those times, when you would have smoked, you should actively plan alternative activities. Don’t go and stand with the smokers. If need be you may need to change your circle of friends. You need to ruthlessly change your routines, in order to enable yourself to remain a non-smoker.
Stay motivated - the first few days are the toughest. Actually the first three days are the toughest, and after that the first 27 days. After that the addiction exists solely in your mind, the physical addiction has left your body.
Avoid other smokers and smoke-filled environments.
Join a support group, like “Smokers to Non-smokers Association”. This association is open to all those who are striving to become Non-Smokers, and Non-Smokers. If you really feel low, you can use some of the techniques that we will demonstrate to you during the program, or join an ongoing “Smokers to Non-Smokers Coaching” program.
Never use medical quitting-aids such as nicotine patches, sprays, chewing gums or green or smoke free cigarettes, after you have become a non-smoker. The problem with all these method’s, is that they still give you Nicotine. The only way to remain a Non-Smoker, for the rest of your life, is to stop taking Nicotine into your body. You can use Nicotine replacement products, as part of the preparation to become a Non-Smoker.
Mark Tiger.
